1.4-litre to 1.8-litre
Toyota 1.5-litre Hybrid Synergy Drive (Prius)
?The engine of the future. Smooth,
owner- and nature-friendly?
Halit Bolkan, Otohaber

Having picked up several gongs at numerous prize givings around the world, the Toyota Prius and its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology returns to Stuttgart to secure its third straight category victory. And it could hardly be more comprehensive: the Japanese 1.5-litre collected more than twice as many points as its nearest rival.

Prius has now won eight International Engine of the Year Awards in three years. Judge John Carey of Wheels underlines just how relevant this car?s engine remains: ?In a time when oil prices are more volatile than ever, Toyota?s hybrid technology makes even more sense.?

Hybrid Synergy Drive is now available in different sizes and configurations across the Toyota and Lexus ranges, but the Prius set the blueprint with features such as regenerative braking, which converts kinetic energy back to electrical energy under braking to boost battery charge. Meanwhile, an electric-only mode can be employed at low speeds or when sat in traffic, ensuring that, for some of the time at least, Prius emits precisely nothing. Its overall CO2 emissions on the EU combined cycle are a rock-bottom 104g/km, falling further to 99g/km out of town. The vehicle even meets California's planned ATPZEV (zero-emission) standards.

Clever marketing is ensuring Prius is fast becoming the vehicle most readily associated with the term ?hybrid?. It?s no wonder the judges are impressed: ?Seamless integration of two power sources,? concludes Road & Track?s Patrick Hong. ?A real interim solution no other company has been able to match.?
