New Civic Type-R on the way!
On display at the International Auto Show of Geneva, the Type-R Concept anticipates the lines of the next model which will be marketed in 2007. It is Honda's intention to make the new Civic Type-R again the perfect fit for the racing amateur and to proceed to its FIA homologation for circuit and rally racing.
To reach that target and further increase the success of the predecessor, Honda have renewed their committment to the Customer Service and also awarded the Development Work to JAS MOTORSPORT, which will have the responsibility to develop and homologate the competition parts for Gr.N, Gr.A and the new coming FIA Gr.R regulations.
"We wish to continue and further consolidate the Customer Racing Service which we started with the previous Civic Type-R and which, in just 4 years of activity, boasted over 250 racing customers in Europe" says William De Braekeleer, Chief of Motorsport Activities at Honda Motor Europe. "The new Civic Type-R will again be "the car to have" for our customers to live their racing passion".
JAS Motorsport in fact will first develop Gr.N and Gr.A competition kits which will be already complying with the new Gr.R specifications, so that all customers could gain experience in Gr.A in 2007 before having to swithc to Group R in 2008.
"From the pure engineering standpoint the new rules are highly challenging" comments JAS Technical Director Stefano Fini "as for the first time the FIA will impose price restrictions on the individual components of the kit while giving a sensible freedom of evolution. This will force the manufacturers to develop real race cars at low cost, which will be certainly beneficial to our sport".
The Gr.A kit (which will be later re-homologated as Gr.R) will feature engine parts, a transmission kit including sequential (5 and 6 speeds) and suspension components.
"In other words" concludes Alessandro Mariani "our customers will go racing with a car as fast as a current Gr.A which will cost less than a current Gr.N. On top of that, all cars will be in some way equal having the same engine restrictions and the same weight. We are firmly convinced that cost reduction is the way to go to re-activate motorsport in general"
The new technical and homologation regulations will be active as of January,1,2008 and will re-categorize the entry classes of rally racing, replacing Gr.A and Gr.N (Gr.N will have 2 years of overlapping with the new rules).
